In NOVEMBER, 64 Hopesters and friends participated in our 7th Annual Day of Service on 11/24 as we served the community in lieu of our regularly formatted worship.

The Presbytery team, which includes Nancy and Erika Rembert Smith of Washington Shores, advocates for bail relief which would allow a non-profit to pay bail for persons accused of nonviolent crimes and be reimbursed in full when they appear in court. Nancy joined other leaders from Central Florida Presbytery to consult with Orange County Public Defender Bob Wesley and an anonymous donor, then meeting with state Senator Randolph Bracy to advocate for Cash Bail Relief. In Orange County 79 percent of persons incarcerated in a county jail in December had not been convicted of a crime but merely could not afford cash bail - which averages between $500 and $2,000.

During Advent, Hopesters and friends donated enough to abolish $770,000 of medical debt. Amazing!! This was part of Hope's annual Alternative Christmas Gift program - encouraging gifts that matter by changing the world for good. In DECEMBER, Hope surpassed by more than 50 percent the session's goal of raising $5,000 for RIP Medical Debt - with every $100 forgiving $10,000 of medical debt for persons in financial distress. In addition, designated 5 percent of January offerings among these nonprofits: Human Rights Watch, one of the world's leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights and Creating Opportunities for Parenting Education (COPE)/Zenith, Osceola County school program for pregnant students or those with children – providing classes in parenting & childbirth along with an accredited child care center, allowing students to fulfill high school diploma requirements. designated 10 percent of offerings to shared mission through our Presbytery and another 5 percent to an in-house annual Distribution Fund (to underwrite our year-end $5K matching fund + other gifts).

offered free shopping for books among 300+ titles culled from the library of Nancy Graham Ogne and Paul Ogne - with topics from faith and theology to history and biography, fiction, business, sports, science, math and entertainment. solicited Per Capita donations for ministry with the PC(USA) at local, regional and national levels. In JANUARY, Hope continued its pursuit of racial healing alongside our sister church Washington Shores, gathering for the film Just Mercy, followed by group reflection. In reality, these categories are a bit fluid - designed as a flexible framework rather than strict demarcations. We’ve identified 8 umbrellas or “pavilions” of service - categories that we think relate to these and broader biblical themes: health & wellness poverty action shepherd care for the often neglected mentoring creation and animal care education & the arts justice and gospel proclamation.

To that end, we’ve committed to give back… to invest at least 20 percent of monthly offerings to ministries and causes which advance Jesus’ self-affirmed purposes. Too often, we church types have lost sight of this calling … and, to our discredit, we’ve sometimes built empires and pursued status to the neglect of it.Īt Hope, we hunger to be a community that serves and shares God’s love with the world – in local neighborhoods, central Florida, and the world.
